दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया को पार करके भारत के उत्तर-पूर्व में आएं तो आपको यहाँ के निवासियों में मातृवंशीय परंपराओं का एक अहम गुण देखने को मिलेगा. मेघालय का खासी समुदाय एक उदाहरण है. इन मातृवंशीय परंपराओं को पड़ोसी राज्यों ने भी अपनाया है. असम की शादियों में शादी से पहले होने वाले ‘जुरून’ समारोह में दुल्हन के माथे पर सिंदूर सास द्वारा लगाया जाता है. आमतौर पर भारत में यह कार्य पति द्वारा किया जाता है, लेकिन असम में मान्यता है कि ऐसा करने से यह स्थापित होता है कि सास सहित पूरे परिवार ने दुल्हन को स्वीकार कर लिया है.

आइए एक बार महाकाव्य महाभारत में चलते हैं. यहाँ भी उत्तर-पूर्वीय भारत की मातृवंशीय प्रकृति के संकेत मिलते हैं. महाकाव्य में वर्णित है कि देश से निष्कासित अर्जुन जब मणिपुर पहुचें तो वहाँ की योद्धा राजकुमारी चित्रांगदा को अर्जुन से प्रेम हो गया और उन्होंने अर्जुन से विवाह कर लिया, इस शर्त के साथ कि वह अर्जुन की मातृभूमि नहीं जाएंगी क्योंकि उनकी संतान मणिपुर की सिंहासन की असली वारिस थी. बाहरी पुरुष को स्वीकार कर स्थानीय जड़ों से जुड़े रहने का यह एक अद्भुत उदाहरण है. दूसरी तरफ पड़ोसी नाग कबीले की रानी उलिपि को भी अर्जुन से प्रेम हो जाता है और वह अर्जुन का अपहरण करवा लेती हैं, लेकिन बाद में एक संघर्ष के बाद अर्जुन चित्रांगदा को प्राप्त होते हैं.
इस कहानी की ऐतिहासिक सत्यता पर लोग प्रश्नचिन्ह उठा सकते हैं लेकिन असल सच्चाई यही है कि यह पूर्व में स्त्रियों के सशक्तिकरण और उनके रुतबे की सत्यता को बताता है. मणिपुर की जानी मानी बॉक्सर मैरीकॉम खुद चित्रांगदा के इतिहास की कहानी बताती हैं. उनका पूरा परिवार ही नहीं अपितु पूरा मणिपुर की ऐसी सशक्त महिलाओं का उदाहरण है. सवाल यह उठता है कि वो लोग कौन हैं जो भारत की सनातन परंपरा में स्त्रियों की कोई जगह न होने की बात करते हैं? उनके सतही ज्ञान को उत्तर-पूर्व के समूहों की जेनेटिक संरचना मुँह चिढ़ाती प्रतीत होती है.
