वक़्त के अजीब रंग बालपन से ही देखे थे उसने. जन्म के कुछ साल ही बीते थे कि माई चल बसी. भरा-पूरा संयुक्त परिवार था, बड़की माई ने उसे आँचल में समेट लिया. साल बीता, नई माँ घर में आ गईं लेकिन बाबूजी ने उसे अपने स्नेह-छत्र से विलग नहीं किया तनिक भी. बाबूजी तीन भाइयों में सबसे छोटे थे. बड़े भाई ज़मींन जायजाद संभालते, मँझले भाई बाहर अच्छी और रसूखदार नौकरी करते थे. यूँ तो भाइयों में स्नेह व आपसी मान-आदर बहुत था पर मँझले भाई के क्रोधी स्वभाव व शानदार नौकरी की ठसक से सब लिहाज़ वश चुप ही रहते थे. पिता को लिखने-पढ़ने का अत्यधिक शौक़ था. उन्होने अपने प्रयास से एक लाइब्रेरी बनायी थी. अनेक किताबों के साथ हस्तलिखित यात्रा-वृतांत व संस्मरणों का संग्रह उनके लाइब्रेरी की शान थी. अभी वह जीवन में कोई राह चुनता तभी पिता कैंसर से ग्रस्त हो गये. उस जमाने में भी हवाई जहाज़ से वेल्लौर ले जाकर भाईयों ने इलाज करवाया पर बचा न सके.

किशोरावस्था में पिता की स्नेहिल छाया छिन जाना बड़ा आघात था. वह बहुत ही शांत व अंतर्मुखी हो गया. त्रासदियां भी जीवन को रुकने नहीं देतीं, जीवन अपनी राह पर चलने लगा. पर मँझले बाबूजी ने तो ना जाने कैसी सनक पाल ली थी. जब भी कुछ करने या खर्चने की बात होती तो उँची आवाज में एक ही प्रलाप करने लगते; “कैसा पैसा .. कौन सा पैसा? सारा पैसा तुम्हारे पिता की लाइब्रेरी, उनके इलाज और श्राद्ध में लग गया”. बड़े बाबूजी भी कुछ नहीं कर पाते. उनके रौद्र रूप के सामने किसी को अपनी जायज़ बातें भी रखने की हिम्मत नहीं होती.    

बड़का बाबूजी ने बस एक अच्छा काम किया कि मँझले बाबूजी की ग़ैरमौजूदगी में उसे इंजीनियरिंग की पढ़ाई करने भेज दिया. पढाई चलने लगी पर खर्च के लिए ज़रूरत सौ रुपये की होती तो किसी तरह उसे साठ-सत्तर रुपये ही मिलते. हर महीने उस पर कुछ ना कुछ उधार चढ़ जाता. कभी दबी ज़ुबान से माँगना चाहता तो मँझले बाबूजी का वही प्रलाप पूरी हवेली को थर्रा देता कि तुम्हारे पिता के इलाज और श्राद्ध में लग गये इतने पैसे. ये बातें सबका कलेजे चीर कर रख देती थीं पर मँझले बाबूजी की दहशत के आगे इनकी बेबसी बस ख़ून के घूँट पीकर रह जाती. वह कैसे भी पढ़कर वापस आ गया. नौकरी लगी, शादी हुई और पढ़ी-लिखी पत्नी ज़िंदगी में आई. अब ज़िंदगी ने एक सरल राह पकड़ रही थी. लेकिन एक चुनौती शेष थी. उसकी बहन ब्याहने लायक हो चली थी, ढ़ेर सारे पैसे चाहिए थे. उसकी नौकरी तो बस चंद सौ के दरमाहे की थी.     

तभी उसके संयुक्त परिवार की ज़मीन का एक बड़ा टुकड़ा सरकार ने कारख़ाने के लिये अधिग्रहण किया. हज़ारों रूपयों का मुआवज़ा मिला. छठ पूजा का समय था, सब घर पर आए थे. उसने धीरे से बहन की शादी का हवाला देते हुए अपना हिस्सा माँगा. यह सुनना था कि फिर वही अनर्गल प्रलाप शुरू हो गया कि तुम्हारे पिता …. वह पैसे का मोह था, क्रोध का अतिरेक था, स्वार्थ की पराकाष्ठा थी या कोई सनक जो मँझले बाबूजी ऐसा व्यवहार करते थे. यह तो भगवान ही जाने पर कई बार रिश्तों और उम्र की लिहाज के कारण हक ही नहीं मारा जाता बल्कि स्वाभिमान भी दब जाता है. लोग सम्मान की चुप्पी को दब्बूपन का गूँगापन समझ लेते हैं.     

कहते हैं ना कि रबर को उतना ही खींचो जितनी खिंच सके, ज़्यादा खींचने से वो टूटकर चोट पहुँचाता है. उस प्रलाप के बाद फैलने वाली मौन आज नहीं दिखी. आज वह उठा और पहली बार उसके स्वाभिमान की गरज को सबने स्तंभित होकर सुना: “मेरे बाबूजी के इलाज और श्राद्ध में २० से २५ हज़ार लगे थे, बहुत बहुत धन्यवाद जो आपने बाबूजी का इलाज करवाया. उस २०-२५ हज़ार के बदले मैं अपने हिस्से का ३५ हज़ार छोड़ता हूँ. आज के बाद किसी के मुँह से मैं यह नहीं सुनना चाहता कि उसने यह सब करवाया. मैने आज हिसाब बराबर कर दिया है. मैं बाबूजी के इस क़र्ज़ से मुक्त हुआ. मैंने आज बाबूजी का सही मायनों में तर्पण किया है. मेरी बहन की शादी भी होगी और धूमधाम से होगी”. मँझले बाबूजी को तो साँप सूंघ गया हो जैसे. उस दिन के बाद मँझले बाबूजी के मुँह से ऐसे शब्द दोबारा कभी किसी ने नहीं सुने…
