कॉलोनी बनने के समय से एक दद्दू यहाँ रहते हैं. आज से 15 साल पहले भी दद्दू साठ वर्ष के दिखते थे, आज भी 60 वर्ष के ही लगते हैं. सुनाई कम देता है या यूं कहें कि उतना ही सुनते हैं जो उनके काम का हो. सबके घरों पर उनकी पैनी नज़र रहती है. नल टोंटी खराब हो तो ठीक कराने वाले को यही बुलाते हैं. पचास रुपये का काम सत्तर में होता है, बीस रुपये दद्दू की जेब में जाते हैं. कॉलोनी वालों को भी एक सहारा है, कोई भी काम हो तो दद्दू को ही बुलाया जाता है. किसी घर में मरम्मत पुताई का काम हो तो दद्दू उस घर के दिन में 5 चक्कर इस उम्मीद में काटते हैं कि कुछ सामान निकले तो वो उसे घर ले जाकर रद्दी वाले को बेच आएं. एक बार तो इस उतावलेपन में वह सामने वाली आंटी के घर का नया स्टूल उठा लाए और रद्दीवाले को बेच दिया. समय रहते आंटी की नज़र पड़ गयी वरना वह यही सोचती रह जातीं कि आखिर स्टूल कहां गायब हो गया. कई वर्षों से मैंने दद्दू को तिकड़म भिड़ाते देखा है.
लेकिन आज कुछ ऐसा हुआ जिसे सोचकर लगा कि सत्तर वर्ष की उम्र में भी उनका दिमाग कैंची की तरह चलता है. कॉलोनी के कई लोग जब घर से बाहर जाते हैंतो दद्दू को हज़ार-दो हज़ार रुपए दे कर जाते हैं ताकि वो मेन गेट खोल कर अंदर सो जाएं. हालांकि कॉलोनी में एक चौकीदार भी है पर दद्दू घर में सो जाते हैं तो लोग चैन से घरके बाहर रहते है. भले ही यदि सच में किसी दिन कोई चोर घुस गया यो एक थप्पड़ में ही दद्दू को ढेर कर सकता है गर्मी की छुट्टियों में दद्दू की चांदी हो जाती है, पैसा वो पाँच घरों से लेते हैं पर सोते एक के ही घर में हैं.
हमारे घर के पीछे ही पिताजी के दोस्त के छोटे भाई रहते हैं. सगे नहीं हैं, पर सगे रिश्तेदारों से बढ़कर हैं, छोटे भाई के जैसे. कुछ पारिवारिक कारणों से कई दिनों से बाहर हैं. ठंड का मौसम था, मैं छत पर बैठकर धूप का आनंद लेते हुए अमरूद खा रही थी, नीचे देखा तो दद्दू घर के सामने काफी देर से किसी उधेड़बुन में लगे हुए थे. कालोनी में टहलते रहने की उनकी आदत है, इसलिए मैंने भी ध्यान नहीं दिया. आधे घंटे बाद वह फिर गेट के सामने आकर खड़े हो गए और मम्मी को ‘मैडम जी’ करके आवाज़ दी. मम्मी बाहर निकली तो उन्होंने बताया कि कल पीछे (पीछे से तात्पर्य है चाचा जी का घर) कोई आदमी बाउंड्री वाल कूद कर अंदर गया था. हमने परसों भी देखा था, घबराकर मम्मी ने चाचा जी को फोन घुमाया. चाचाजी ने कहा कि उनके घर काम करने वाली बाई के पास गेट की चाभी है, उससे चाभी लेकर एक बार चेक कर आएँ कि कहीं कुछ चोरी तो नहीं हो गई. मम्मी तुरंत ही चेक करके आई पर सब चीजें सही सलामत थीं.
घर आने के बाद मेरे और मम्मी दोनों के मन में यह सवाल उठा कि आखिर दद्दू ने सुबह ही क्यों नही बताया. यदि किसी को परसों भी देखा था तो यह बात बताने में इतना विलम्ब क्यों किया. इस सवाल की गुत्थी तब सुलझी जब मम्मी ने चाचा जी को फोन करके बताया कि सब ठीक है। फिर चाचा जी ने मम्मी को बताया कि इस बार दद्दू को घर में सोने के लिये नहीं बोला था.
दरअसल दद्दू की प्लानिंग ये थी कि ऐसी अफवाह फैला देंगे तो शायद चाचा उनको घर में सोने के लिए बोल दें. दद्दू को न सुनाई देता है ना दिखाई देता है. वह 1 किलोमीटर प्रति घंटा की रफ्तार से चलते हैं पर भयभीत करने के लिए कथा-कहानी बनाने के लिए उनका दिमाग अच्छा दौड़ता है.
