अक्षयवट की कहानी

मत्स्य पुराण में वर्णन है कि जब प्रलय आता है, युग का अंत होता है. पृथ्वी जलमग्न हो जाती है और सबकुछ डूब जाता है. उस समय भी चार वटवृक्ष नही डूबते. उनमें सबसे महत्वपूर्ण है वह वटवृक्ष, जो प्रयागराज नगरी में यमुना के तट पर अवस्थित है. मान्यता है कि ईश्वर इस वृक्ष पर बालरूप में रहते हैं और प्रलय के बाद नई सृष्टि की रचना करते हैं. अपनी इसी विशिष्टता के कारण यह वटवृक्ष अक्षयवट के नाम से जाना जाता है. ऐसा वट जिसका क्षय नही हो सकता.

बीते 10 जनवरी, 2019 को उत्तरप्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ ने इस वटवृक्ष को हिन्दू श्रद्धालुओं के लिये खोल दिया है. इसके साथ ही सरस्वती कूप में देवी सरस्वती की मूर्ति की प्राण प्रतिष्ठा भी की गई. जैन मत में यह मान्यता है कि प्रथम तीर्थंकर ऋषभदेव जी ने इसी वटवृक्ष के नीचे तपस्या की थी. बौद्ध मत में भी इस वृक्ष को पवित्र माना गया है. वाल्मीकि रामायण और कालिदास रचित ‘रघुवंश’ में भी इस वृक्ष की चर्चा है. आशा और जीवन का संदेश देता यह वटवृक्ष भारतीय संस्कृति का एक प्रतीक है. किंतु प्रश्न है कि इतने महत्वपूर्ण वटवृक्ष से हिंदुओं को 425 वर्षों से दूर क्यों रखा गया था?

 अकबर जिस कथित गंगा जमुनी तहजीब को परवान चढ़ाना चाहता था, उसके लिए प्रयागराज जैसी नगरी में उसके सत्ता की धमक होनी जरूरी थी. ऐसे में अकबर ने वहाँ एक किला बनाने का निर्णय लिया. किले के लिए वो जगह चुनी गई जो हिंदुओं के लिए सर्वाधिक पवित्र थी. अक्षयवट वृक्ष और अन्य दर्जनों मन्दिर इस किले के अंदर आ गए. लेकिन अपने जीवन के उत्तरकाल में अकबर अपने पूर्ववर्ती शासकों और आने वाले उत्तराधिकारियों की तरह क्रूर नही था. इसलिए उसने किले के क्षेत्र में आने वाले मन्दिरों को तो नष्ट किया लेकिन मूर्तियों को छोड़ दिया. ये मूर्तियाँ और अक्षयवट वृक्ष का एक तना स्थानीय पुजारियों को सौंप दिया गया जिसे वे अन्यत्र पूज सकें. इन्ही मूर्तियों और शाखाओं से पातालपुरी मन्दिर बना जहाँ पिछले 425 वर्षों से हिन्दू श्रद्धालू दर्शन करते आ रहे थे जबकि असली अक्षयवट वृक्ष किले में हिंदुओं की पहुँच से दूर कर दिया गया.

वास्तव में यह वृक्ष जिस तरह सनातनता का विचार देता है, वह अत्यंत विपरीत समयकाल में भी हिंदुओं को भविष्य के लिये आशा का प्रतीक था. अकबर इसे एक चुनौती मानता था. इसीलिए उसके आदेश पर वर्षों तक गर्म तेल इस वृक्ष के जड़ों में डाला गया लेकिन यह वृक्ष फिर भी नष्ट नही हुआ. अकबर के बेटे जहाँगीर के शासनकाल में पहले अक्षयवट वृक्ष को जलाया गया. फिर भी वृक्ष नष्ट नही हुआ. इसके बाद जहाँगीर के आदेश पर इस वृक्ष को काट दिया गया. लेकिन जड़ो से फिर से शाखायें निकल आई. जहाँगीर के बाद भी मुगल शासन में अनेकों बार इस वृक्ष को नष्ट करने का प्रयास हुआ. लेकिन यह वृक्ष हर बार पुनर्जीवित होता रहा. ऐसा प्रतीत होता है मानो यह पवित्र वह वृक्ष बारम्बार पुनर्जीवित होकर इस्लामिक आक्रांताओं को यह कठोर संदेश देता रहा कि तुम चाहे जितने प्रयास कर लो किन्तु सनातन धर्म को समाप्त नही कर सकोगे. साथ ही अपने आस्तित्व को मिली हर चुनौती से सफलतापूर्वक निबटकर यह सनातनधर्मियों में नवीन आशा का संचार करता रहा.

मुगलों के बाद यह किला अंग्रेजों के पास रहा और उन्होंने भी मुगलों द्वारा लगाए प्रतिबन्ध को जारी रखा. स्वतंत्रता के पश्चात यह किला भारतीय सेना के नियंत्रण में है. यहाँ आम श्रद्धालुओं का आना सम्भव नही था. श्रद्धालुओं और सन्तों की लगातार मांग के बाद भी किसी सरकार ने इस वृक्ष के दर्शन के लिए सुलभ बनाने में रुचि नही दिखाई. किन्तु उत्तरप्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ के प्रयासों से यह सम्भव हो सका है जिसके लिए वह साधुवाद के पात्र हैं.
