पाकिस्तान बनने के लगभग 6 माह बाद मोहम्मद अली जिन्ना पूर्वी पाकिस्तान की राजधानी ढाका आये। 21 मार्च, 1948 को उन्होंने ढाका के रमना रेस कोर्स मैदान में एक विशाल जनसभा को सम्बोधित किया। इस भाषण में जिन्ना ने कहा कि उर्दू ही पूर्वी पाकिस्तान की सरकारी भाषा होगी और इसकी खिलाफत करने वाले पाकिस्तान के शत्रु होंगे। विरोधाभास देखिए, जिन्ना ने ये भाषण अंग्रेजी में दिया था क्योंकि उन्हें स्वयं उर्दू नही आती थी। वे काठियावाड़ी या अंग्रेजी ही लिख-बोल सकते थे। पूर्वी पाकिस्तान की जनता ने इसे स्वीकार नही किया। कुछ छिटपुट विरोध प्रदर्शन भी हुए। कहते हैं कि यहीं से पाकिस्तान के विभाजन की नींव पड़ गई।
भारत ने स्वतन्त्र होने के 2 वर्ष से थोड़ा अधिक में ही संविधान बनाने का काम पूरा कर लिया और पाँच वर्ष में ही चुनाव कराकर विश्व का सबसे बड़ा लोकतंत्र बन गया। वहीं पाकिस्तान में संविधान बनाने के कई दौर चले। इस बीच पाकिस्तानी सेना या उसके पिट्ठू ही अधिकतर शासन में रहे। पाकिस्तान की सेना में बंगालियों की संख्या 10% थी और केंद्रीय सरकार की बाकी नौकरियों लगभग 15%। ऐसे में यह भाव वहाँ लगातर बनता जा रहा था कि सत्ता का केंद्र पश्चिमी पाकिस्तान ही बना हुआ है और पूर्वी पाकिस्तान को उसके हाल पर छोड़ दिया गया है। शेख मुजीबुर्रहमान बंगालियों के लिए आवाज उठाते रहते थे। 1965 के चुनावों में भी शेख मुजीब ने फील्ड मार्शल अयूब खान के खिलाफ मोहम्मद अली जिन्ना की बहन फातिमा जिन्ना को राष्ट्रपति पद के लिए समर्थन दिया था। इससे मुजीब पाकिस्तानी एस्टेब्लिशमेंट की आँखों की किरकिरी बन गए। लेकिन बंगालियों के लिए बीच वे एक नायक थे। इसीलिए 1970 के आखिरी महीने में जब पाकिस्तान का पहला आम चुनाव हुआ तो मुजीब की पार्टी अवामी लीग ने पूर्वी पाकिस्तान से राष्ट्रीय संसद की सभी 160 सीटें जीत ली और प्रांतीय संसद की 310 में से 298 सीटें जीती।
लेकिन पाकिस्तान के सैन्य शासक जनरल याह्या खान ने एक ‘बंगाली’ को सत्ता सौंपने से इनकार कर दिया। उन्होंने सदन का सत्र बुलाया ही नही। इससे पूर्वी पाकिस्तान में असन्तोष बढ़ने लगा और पूरा प्रान्त इस बेईमानी के खिलाफ सड़क पर आ गया। इस असन्तोष को दबाने के लिए याह्या खान ने पूर्वी पाकिस्तान में आपातकाल लागू करके सेना उतार दी। शेख मुजीब को उठाकर पश्चिमी पाकिस्तान में बंद कर दिया गया। उस समय तक पूर्वी पाकिस्तान की 15% से अधिक आबादी हिंदुओं की थी। पाकिस्तानी सेना में यह मान्यता थी कि अलगाववाद को हवा देने में इन हिंदुओं की बड़ी भूमिका है। ऐसे में पाकिस्तानी सेना के अन्याय का सबसे अधिक शिकार बंगाली हिन्दू ही हुए और स्वाभाविक रूप से वे भागकर भारत मे घुसने लगे। यह संख्या कुछ सैकड़ों में नही बल्कि कई लाखों में थी। इन्ही शरणार्थियों के आने के कारण भारत अब इस पूरे मामले में एक पार्टी बन गया था।
भारत की तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गाँधी इस पूरे घटनाक्रम को बेहद ध्यान से देख रही थीं। शेख मुजीब ने भारत से मदद की मांग की और भारत ने मुक्तिवाहिनी को ट्रेनिंग देना आरम्भ कर दिया। अब तक भारतीय सेना इससे दूर थी। अप्रैल के अंतिम सप्ताह में जनरल सैम मानेकशॉ और इंदिरा गाँधी में मीटिंग हुई। इंदिरा ने जनरल सैम को पूर्वी पाकिस्तान पर हमला करने को कहा। लेकिन मानेकशॉ ने मॉनसून का हवाला देकर गर्मियों में पूर्वी पाकिस्तान जाने को समझदारी नही माना। वे इंदिरा को यह समझाने में कामयाब रहे कि मॉनसून उतरने तक प्रतीक्षा की जाए और बंगलादेश मुक्तिवाहिनी को ट्रेनिंग देकर आंतरिक संघर्ष जारी रखने में मदद की जाए।
इस बीच इंदिरा ने दुनिया भर में राजनयिक दौरे कर पूर्वी पाकिस्तानमें मचे कत्ल-ए-आम पर सबका ध्यान खींचा और अंतरराष्ट्रीय समर्थन जुटाने की कोशिश की। लेकिन अमेरिका इस समय पूरी तरह पाकिस्तान के साथ था। अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति रिचर्ड निक्सन ने एक तरह से इंदिरा को धमकी दी कि यदि भारत पाकिस्तान को तोड़ने की कोशिश करेगा तो नतीजे ठीक न होंगे। लेकिन इंदिरा पर ये धमकी बेअसर रही।
3 दिसम्बर, 1971 को पाकिस्तानी सेना ने भारत की पश्चिमी सीमा पर हमला किया। भारत ने इसे हवाई हमले को पाकिस्तान के तरफ से युद्ध की घोषणा माना। आधिकारिक तौर पर इसके बाद ही भारतीय सेना ने पूर्वी पाकिस्तान में प्रवेश किया। मुक्तिवाहिनी पहले ही पूरी बहादुरी से लड़ रही थी और उनकी संख्या डेढ़ लाख से अधिक थी। पाकिस्तान के लगभग लाख सैनिक और 15 हजार रजाकार पूर्वी पाकिस्तान के हर नगर-ग्राम में मुक्तिवाहिनी से लड़ रहे थे। भारतीय सेना के फील्ड मार्शल मानेक शॉ थे। ईस्टर्न कमांड को लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल जगजीत अरोड़ा लीड कर रहे थे। जनरल जैकब चीफ ऑफ स्टाफ, ईस्टर्न कमांड थे। आरम्भ में चिटगांव और खुलना बन्दरगाह कब्जा कर पाकिस्तानी सेना की सप्लाई रोकने की योजना थी। लेकिन यह जैकब ही थे जिन्होंने मानेक शॉ को यह समझाया कि इससे पहले की संयुक्त राष्ट्र परिषद में कोई प्रस्ताव पास हो, ढाका पर कब्जा कर युद्ध समाप्त करना जरूरी है।
इसके बाद भारतीय सेना का पूरा जोर जल्द से जल्द ढाका पहुँचने पर रहा। उन्होंने दूसरे बड़े शहरों में पाकिस्तानी सेना से मोर्चा लेना जरूरी न समझा। पश्चिमी पाकिस्तान का हवाई सम्पर्क भी पूर्वी पाकिस्तान से टूट गया था और उनके हौसले पस्त थे। ऐसे में जब भारतीय सेना ढाका में पहुँच गई तो पाकिस्तानी कमांडर जनरल नियाजी के होश उड़ गए। 15 दिसम्बर को फील्ड मार्शल मानेक शॉ से लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल जैकब को यह आदेश मिला कि वे नियाजी से मिलकर सरेंडर की तैयारी करें। लेकिन नियाजी तो सिर्फ संयुक्त राष्ट्र के सामने सरेंडर करने को तैयार था। जैकब ने एक तरकीब निकाली। उन्होंने भारतीय एयरफोर्स से पाकिस्तानी सेना के हेडक्वार्टर पर हमला करने को कहा। इस हमले ने पाकिस्तानी सेना के उच्च अधिकारियों को बुरी तरह डरा दिया। अब जैकब का काम आसान था। नियाजी को झुकना पड़ा।
16 दिसम्बर, 1971 को उसी रमना रेस कोर्स मैदान में पाकिस्तानी सेना ने सार्वजनिक आत्मसमर्पण किया जहाँ 23 साल पहले जिन्ना ने उर्दू को एकमात्र आधिकारिक भाषा घोषित करने का फरमान सुनाया था। इस आत्मसमर्पण के साथ ही एक नए राष्ट्र बांग्लादेश का जन्म हुआ। शेख मुजीब को पाकिस्तान ने स्वतन्त्र कर दिया। इस युद्ध में भाग लेनेवाले जनरल अशोक मेहता इसे पिछले 1000 वर्ष में भारत की सबसे बड़ी जीत मानते हैं। इंदिरा गाँधी के लिए भी यह उनके राजनीतिक जीवन की सबसे बड़ी सफलता थी। आत्मसमर्पण करवाने वाले लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल जैकब एक यहूदी थे। बाद में वे भाजपा में भी रहे और अटल जी के शासनकाल में गोवा व पंजाब के राज्यपाल भी रहे। जनरल अरोड़ा अकाली दल से राज्यसभा भेजे गए। आत्मसमर्पण करने वाले सैनिक भारत लाकर खुली जेलों में रखे गए।
आलोचक कहते हैं कि भारत ने जो युद्ध पूर्वी पाकिस्तान की भूमि पर जीता था, वह शिमला में मेज पर गंवा दिया। पाकिस्तान के एक लाख के करीब सैनिक भारत मे कैद थे। यह पाकिस्तानी की कुल सैन्य शक्ति का 30% था। भारत इसका उपयोग कश्मीर मुद्दे को हल करने के लिए कर सकता था। लेकिन ऐसा हुआ नही। यहाँ तक कि जो भारतीय सैनिक पाकिस्तान के जेलों में बंद थे, वे भी पाकिस्तान ने नही छोड़े।
अपने रक्त से बांग्लादेश बनाने के बाद भी भारत यह सुनिश्चित न कर सका कि बांग्लादेश में रहने वाले हिन्दू आत्मसम्मान के साथ जीवन निर्वाह कर सकें। बांग्लादेश की बढ़ती इस्लामिक कट्टरता ने वहाँ रह रहे हिंदुओं के लिए जीवन निर्वाह कठिन ही कर दिया है। बेगम खालिदा जिया के शासन में तो बांग्लादेश में भारत विरोधी भावनाएं बेहद प्रबल हो गई थीं। 1985 के बाद जो वहाबी इस्लाम का दौर चला है उससे बंगलादेश भी अछूता न रह सका है।
