केरल के अपने गांव के इकलौते बीए पास मणि जी सरकारी नौकरी के लिए दिल्ली आए. ज़िद्दी थे, दिल के अच्छे थे और अपने मन की ही करते थे. कुछ ही दिनों में मणि जी को दिल्ली अपनी लगने लगी थी और उनके कई मित्र बन गए. मणि जी ने दिल्ली शिफ्ट होने के दो साल बाद शादी करके गृहस्थी भी बसा ली थी. उनकी हिंदी कमजोर थी और इंग्लिश भी ऐसी कि लोग हंसी नही रोक पाते थे.
दौर विदेशी कम्पनियों के भारत मे पांव पसारने का था. एक दिन अचानक मणि जी को एक पुराने सहकर्मी मित्र मिले जो अब अमरीका की एक बड़ी कम्पनी में काम करते हैं. बातों ही बातों में मणि जी अपने मित्र से पूछते हैं; “ये प्राइवेट कम्पनियों में काम क्या होता है टाई बेल्ट लगा कर घूमने के सिवाय”?
जवाब मिलता है; “तुम खुद आकर क्यों नहीं देख लेते”.
“आएगा आएगा कभी तो आएगा, देखेगा क्या करता तुम लोग उधर”; मुस्कुराते हुए मणि जी ने कहा.
“मणि, एक बार सोच कर देखो, बहुत पैसा है कम्पनी के प्रोजेक्ट में. बस हाँ कर दो एक बार”.
“तुम लेड़की है क्या कि तुम्हारे पीछे आएगा सरकारी नौकरी छोड़के”; मणि जी कहकर उस मुलाकात को खत्म करके घर चले जाते हैं.
मित्र को कहीं ना कहीं संकेत मिल गया था कि ज़ोर देने पर मणि जैसा कर्मठ और ईमानदार व्यक्ति उसकी टीम में आ सकता है. अगली मुलाकात एक डांस बार में होती है. जहां आदमी-औरत सब साथ शराब पी रहे हैं, नाच रहे हैं. नज़र पहुंचती है नशे में धुत्त कुछ भारतीयों पर जो जापानी सहकर्मियों के संग फर्श पर और शराब की अपेक्षा में चुल्लू बांधे बैठे है. वहीं एक जापानी युवक जग से भरी शराब से उनको पिला रहा है. तभी अचानक महिला मित्रों के साथ नाच रहा एक सरदार धड़ाम से फर्श पर गिर जाता है और पलक झपकने से भी पहले वह सरदार उठ कर चीखता है और गुस्से में अपनी शर्ट फाड़ देता है.
यह सब मणि जी के लिए आश्चर्यजनक था. इस शोरगुल में मित्र की कही बातें मणि जी को सुनाई ही नहीं दे रही थी. “मणि क्या सोच रहे हो? तुम सुन भी रहे हो मेरी बातें? हाँ कर दो, बस मेरे लिए”; मित्र ने एक बार फ़िर बात पर जोर दिया. शोरगुल के बीच अपने मित्र के ललचाते प्रस्ताव पर मणि जी उस प्राइवेट कंपनी में काम करने का फैसला करते हैं.
दफ्तर में मणि जी को काम करने के लिए तीसरी मंजिल पर एक कमरा मिला है जिसे उन्हे अपने मित्र के साथ शेयर करना है. वहां एक टेबल कुर्सी के साथ दो कैबिनेट्स रखी हुई हैं. उनका मित्र अपने जान पहचान के कुछ कश्मीरी, सरदार और लोकल लोगों को कम्पनी ज्वाइन कराता है. वह प्राय: अंग्रेजी अफसरों की खुशामद ऐसे करता दिखता है जैसे बरसों का कोई कर्ज उतार रहा हो.
एक दिन मणि जी ने पूछ ही लिया; “तुमको इतना अंग्रेज़ी तो आता नहीं, इतना चक्कर कैसे लगाता तुम गोड़े लोगों के आजु बाजू”?
जवाब मिला; ” मैं इशारों मे समझ जाता हूँ कि वे क्या कहना चाह रहे हैं। पर तुम इतना अलग थलग क्यों रहते हो मणि?”
“ओ मेरे को तेल पानी लगाना नहीं आता”; निश्छल हंसी के साथ कहते हैं जिसके लिए वह दोस्तों और सहकर्मियों में चर्चित हैं. मित्र को भी ये बातें नहीं चुभती थी.
मेहनत और लगन से काम में लगे रहने वाले मणि जी को फर्क नहीं पड़ता था कि दूर से घूरने वाला गोरा बॉस उनके बारे में क्या धारणा बना रहा है. साल बीतता है और पार्टी के सालाना जलसे पर प्रोमोशन घोषित किये जाते हैं. मित्र का प्रमोशन टीम लीडर के रूप में होता है, कारण में सब वही काम गिनाये जाते हैं जो मणि जी ने किए थे. मणि जी को हल्का सा बुरा तब लगता है जब एक सहकर्मी चुटकी लेते हुए कहता है कि रसोई में खाना स्वादिष्ठ खाना बनाने वाले की नहीं बल्कि उसे परोसने वाले की ही प्रशंसा होती है. इस सबसे अविचलित मणि जी के लिए महत्वपूर्ण अपनी सेल्फ रेस्पेक्ट थी और वह राउडी स्टाइल में रेजिग्नशन लेटर हमेशा शर्ट की जेब मे रखकर घूमते थे.
मणि जी फिर काम मे लग गये. रिसेप्शन पर बैठी लड़की अक्सर सर दर्द का बहाना कर उनसे इधर उधर घूमने की परमिशन मांगती रहती. एक जूनियर तो बस थर-थर कांपता था. दोस्तों को बताता था कि एक तो मणि जी जल्दी गुस्सा हो जाते हैं और दूसरे उनकी बात ठीक से समझ नहीं आती, आज भी वह थर्ड फ्लोर को ‘टेड’ फ्लोर कहते हैं.
फिर साल बदलता है और टीम का विस्तार होता है. कम्पनी की एक अन्य साइट उसी शहर में खुलती हैं. चेंज मैनेजमेंट से लेकर प्रोक्योरमेंट आदि पर बहुत काम होते हैं. बहुत सारे वेंडर पार्टनर्स को परमानेंट किया जाता है. मणि जी का मित्र अब डाइरेक्टर बन चुका है. रिसेप्शन वाली लड़की अब मणि जी के मित्र की कृपा से मैनेजर बन चुकी होती है. उसकी ग्रोथ के किस्से उनके मित्र आज भी कम्पनी की नई लड़कियों को सुनाते हैं. वेंडर्स की टीम का एक लड़का कम्पनी पे रोल पर लिया जाता है, वही जिसे काम के मामले में मणि जी अक्सर लतियाया करते थे. मणि जी आज भी कमरे की उसी कुर्सी पर टीम लीडर की पोजीशन में बैठते हैं. उन्हे कोई शिकायत भी नहीं है या शायद है भी तो मन के उस कोने में जहां कोई नहीं पहुंच सकता.
उम्र 47 कब हो जाती है, पता नहीं चलता पर उन्हे अब भी इस बात की खुशी थी कि कंपनी में सबसे ऊपर की पोजीशन पर बैठा उनका मित्र उनकी बात सुनता है और समझता भी है. वह अपने मित्र की आंखों में आंखें डालकर चुभने वाला सच कह दिया करते थे, मित्र बुरा नहीं मानता था और न ही मणि जी से बदलने की अपेक्षा करता था. कई जगहों पर तो वह मणि जी के लिए पक्षपात करने को भी तैयार रहता था. टीम में मित्र के सिवाय कोई ऐसा न रहा जिसे मणि जी से लगाव हो, हालांकि सब उन्हें दिल से अच्छा और ज़ुबान से कड़वा समझते थे. ऐसे में अधिकांश टीम मेम्बर चाहते थे कि मणि जी अन्य किसी साइट पर ट्रांसफर हो जाये.
“तो अब हम उस लड़के को रिपोर्ट करेगा जो कल तक मेरे जूनियर को रिपोर्ट करता था. टैलेंट के नाम पर चापलूसी के अलावा है क्या उसके पास”?; मणि जी की क्रुद्ध आवाज़ कमरे से बाहर आ रही थी.
“ऑथोरिटी का डिसिजन है तुम समझ नहीं रहे हो मणि”; मित्र ने नरम और असहाय आवाज़ में कहा.
“नहीं हमको बताओ हम समझेगा. तुम अथॉरिटी हो पर तुम्हारे हाथ मे कुछ नहीं है? मैं अथॉरिटी नहीं है, तब भी सब अपने हिसाब से कर लेता है”, मणि जी ने स्वर तीखा किया।
“और तभी तुम्हे कोई टीम में पसन्द नहीं करता, मेरे कहने का मतलब है सब देखकर चलना होता है” मित्र ने बात खत्म करने की कोशिश की.
“तो हम भी यहां रिश्तेदारी करने नहीं आया”, कहकर मणि जी कमरे से बाहर निकल गए. मणि जी का हृदय कुछ ऐसा है कि उनका गुस्सा भी दूसरों से अधिक स्वयं को आहत करता था.
‘मणि जैसे हंसमुख इंसान को हार्ट अटैक कैसे आ सकता है’ लोगों की बातचीत हॉस्पिटल के वार्ड में लेटे मणि जी के कानो में पहुंच रही होती है. आंखों के सामने अंधेरा देख वह पलकें उठाने की कोशिश करते होश हुए में आते हैं. उनकी आखों के कोनों से रक्त जैसा पानी निकलता है सामने अपनी दोनों बच्चियों को रोता देखकर, पास में ही बीवी बदहवास सी बैठी है. सहकर्मियों का साथ ऑफिस के वह मित्र भी मिलने आये हैं. कुछ देर बाद सांत्वना देते हुवे मित्र ने अपनी बात रखी ; “मणि, तुम चिंता मत करना और पूरी तरह से स्वस्थ होकर ही ऑफिस आना. तुम्हारा काम कम करने के लिए तुम्हे कम्पनी की छोटी साइट पर भेजने का फैसला किया है जहाँ तुम ख़ुद के लिये भी समय निकाल सकोगे”.
