इतिहास किसी सटीक सहस्त्र कोणीय वीडियो पर आधारित नहीं होता. यह तथ्यों के अलावा इतिहासकार की कल्पना, कथा शैली, रुझान एवं पूर्वाग्रह आदि से मिलकर बनता है. फिल्मकार व कथाकार भी इससे परे नहीं होते. फिल्मकारिता व अभिनय के नये आयाम गढ़ने वाली फिल्म ‘शोले’ भी अपवाद नहीं है.
रामगढ़ और उसके आसपास के क्षेत्रों में ठाकुर बलदेव सिंह उर्फ़ ठाकुर साहब के बढ़ते अन्याय और अत्याचार के विरुद्ध एक दलित युवक गब्बर ने आवाज़ उठाई थी. उसके माता-पिता ठाकुर के खेत में मजदूर थे.
लगभग १८ साल पहले की बात है. उस साल फसल बहुत अच्छी हुई थी. इंदिरा सरकार का बीस सूत्रीय कार्यक्रम गाँव गाँव तक फ़ैल चुका था. अन्य दलित, पिछड़े और शोषित वर्ग के लोगों की तरह गब्बर के पिता के अरमानों को भी प्रगतिशील इंदिरा सरकार ने समाज में अपना उचित स्थान पाने के लिए प्रेरित कर दिया था. हरित क्रान्ति के फलस्वरूप पहले से रईस ठाकुर और हरा हो चुका था. किन्तु उसने गब्बर के पिता को गब्बर को स्कूल भेजने के लिए मात्र ६ रुपये १२ आने देने से न सिर्फ मना कर दिया बल्कि उसको बुरी तरह अपमानित भी किया.
संभवतः गब्बर के माता पिता यह अपमान सह न सके और वंचित सर्वहारा वर्ग के पास बचे आखिरी उपाय यानी आत्महत्या को गले लगा लिया. वे इस संसार में गब्बर को अपनी लड़ाई खुद लड़ने के लिए छोड़ गए.
दलित होने के बावजूद गब्बर ने एकलव्य के दिखाए मार्ग को अपनाकर स्वयं विभिन शस्त्रास्त्र जैसे चाकू, बल्लम, कांता आदि धारदार हथियार चलाना सीख लिया था. पर उसकी विशेष रूचि निशानेबाज़ी में थी जिसका उत्कृष्ट नमूना बाद में उसके जीवन-वृत्त में कई जगह देखने को मिलता है.
गब्बर ने हथियार चलाने में जो प्रवीणता हासिल की थी, उसके चलते अन्य दलित और पिछड़ी जातियों के युवक उसे ‘गब्बर सिंह’ कहने लगेे.
यह गब्बर की प्रगतिशील सोच ही थी जिसने उसे गाँव की उपज में दलित, वंचित, शोषित समाज का वाजिब हिस्सा मांगने और न मिलने पर उसे छीन लेने के लिए प्रेरित किया था. दलित, मुस्लिम और अन्य पिछड़ी जातियों के युवक उसकी सोच से प्रभावित होकर गब्बर के साथ आ गए और एक नए प्रगतिशील, जाति-विरोधी और समतावादी दल का जन्म हुआ. दल का ध्येय ऐसा था कि पचास पचास कोस की दूरी पर जब कोई सर्वहारा बच्चा रोता था तो इससे पहले कि माँ कुछ कहे या करे, गब्बर अपने गोशाले से दूध भेज देता था.
ठाकुर ने शोषक वर्ग में जन्म लिया था. राज्य पुलिस में अधिकारी बनकर वह विभिन्न दलितों, पिछड़ों, अल्पसंख्यकों के आर्थिक और यौन शोषण में लिप्त रहता था. कई अपराधियों से उसके दोस्ताना और गहरे सम्बन्ध थे. उनमे से कुछ का प्रयोग उसने दलितों के विरूद्ध भी किया.
यहाँ तक कि जब ठाकुर ने दो छुटभैया अपराधियों जय और वीरू को गिरफ्तार तो कर लिया किन्तु रास्ते में डाकुओं से फर्जी मुठभेड़ का नाटक कर न सिर्फ इन दोनों को आसानी से सुरक्षित जाने दिया बल्कि मुठभेड़ में खर्च हुई गोलियों का गबन भी किया. बाद में ठाकुर ने इन्ही छुटभैये अपराधियों को गब्बर के खिलाफ इस्तेमाल किया. किन्तु लठैती के लिए इन्हे अपना पालक-बालक बनाने से पहले जातिवादी ठाकुर पूछ ही बैठा – कउन जात हो ? जबाब में कुर्मी व यादव सुनकर सवर्ण श्रेष्ठता का अभिमानी ठाकुर असहज हुआ था.
दलितों व पिछड़ों पर अन्याय सिर्फ रामगढ़ तक सीमित रहा हो, ऐसा नहीं था. हरिराम नाई को जिस तरह उसके अपने पिछड़े भाइयों के खिलाफ जासूसी करने में प्रयोग किया गया, यह दर्शाता है कि शासक-वर्ग ने किस तरह पिछड़ों की एकता को कुचलने के लिए हरसंभव प्रयास किये. हरिराम नाई का उपयोग कर ‘अंग्रेज़-परस्त जेलर’ ने सर्वहारा वर्ग के भोलेपन और आपसी फूट का फायदा अपने बुर्जुआ वर्ग-स्वार्थ पूरा करने के लिए किया.
ठाकुर के शोषण के पीड़ितों में एक थे रहीम चाचा. गरीबी और बेबसी से त्रस्त रहीम चाचा ने ‘देश के संसाधनों पर अल्पसंख्यकों का पहला हक’ होते हुए भी अपने बुढ़ापे की लाठी और जिगर के टुकड़े को कमसिन उम्र में ही बीड़ी की फैक्ट्री में काम करने भेज दिया. पशु प्रेमी बसन्ती न होती तो रहीम चाचा का क्या होता. गब्बर इन वंचितों की आवाज था पर ठाकुर ने इन्हे छल छद्म से गब्बर के खिलाफ भड़का रखा था. उसी छद्म का एक हिस्सा थी पानी टंकी से मौसी को ब्लैकमेल कर शुरु हुई वीरु और बसंती की प्रेम कहानी. अपने स्वार्थ के लिए ही ठाकुर जय के माउथ ऑर्गन की सुरीली रागनियों को सुनकर भी अनसुना करता था.
यदि गब्बर सिंह और ठाकुर बलदेव सिंह की इस महागाथा को थोड़ी गहराई से देखा जाए तो वास्तिवकता में यह ‘वर्ग संघर्ष’ की ही एक कहानी है जिसमे दलित, शोषित एवं वंचित वर्ग के उभरते युवा नायक को खलनायक बना कर प्रस्तुत किया गया.
ठाकुर बलदेव सिंह ने अपने घर पर हथियारों का जखीरा इकठ्ठा कर रखा था जो निश्चित ही शोषित-वंचित सर्वहारा वर्ग के क्रूर दमन के लिए प्रयोग किये जाने थे. जब गब्बर सिंह के प्रगतिशील मंच ने तथाकथित सवर्णों की इस हथियारबंदी का विरोध किया तो ठाकुर बलदेव सिंह ने उसे झूठे मामलों में फंसा कर जेल भिजवा दिया. नाना प्रकार की यातनाएं भी इस दलित नायक के अदम्य वेग को रोक न सकीं और वह अंततः जेल से निकल भागने में कामयाब हो गया.
रामगढ़ लौट कर आते ही गब्बर पुरानी कटुता दूर करने के लिए ठाकुर के परिवार से मिलने गया. वहां ठाकुर के परिवार वालों ने उस पर जानलेवा हमला कर दिया. इस मुठभेड़ में विजय सर्वहारा वर्ग की हुई और ठाकुर बलदेव सिंह के परिवार के सभी सदस्य (उसकी बहू के अतिरिक्त) मारे गए.
बदले की आग में जलते ठाकुर ने अपने लाव लश्कर के साथ गब्बर पर जबरदस्त हमला बोल दिया. गब्बर ने आत्मरक्षा में मुँहतोड़ जबाब दिया और इस लड़ाई में ठाकुर अपने दोनों हाथ गँवा बैठा. इसके बाद ठाकुर ने उन दो छुटभैये अपराधियों जय और वीरु के सहारे गब्बर से बदला लेने की ठानी. अपने रसूख के दम पूरे गाँव से गब्बर का बहिष्कार कराया. बसंती को गब्बर द्वारा जबरदस्ती नचवाने का कुप्रचार करवाया जबकि गब्बर बसंती को फिल्मों में काम दिलाने के लिए उसका लाइव ऑडिशन करवा रहा था. इतना ही नहीं, ठाकुर ने सांभा व अन्य साथियों के प्रति खाँटी कामरेड गब्बर की क्रूरता का दुष्प्रचार भी किया जो पूर्णतः कपोल-कल्पित था.
